Car Brake Repairs in South Bedfordshire

If your brakes aren’t in excellent condition, the risks involved in driving increase dramatically. They help the driver to manoeuvre the car, slow down at the first sign of danger, and prevent accidents from happening. We rely on them constantly, and because of this, they’re the components most likely to suffer from daily wear and tear. In this article the Country Vehicles team looks at 5 signs you need brake repair.

5 Signs You Need Brake Repair

If there are any signs that your brakes are in less than perfect condition, book in for a brake check at Country Vehicles and we'll make any repairs necessary for you.

1. Strange Noises

If you become aware of screeching, clanking or grinding sounds when you depress the brake pedal whilst driving, you should take your car to the garage as soon as possible. There are a number of causes for such noises, including:

• Worn brake pads
• Damaged brake lining
• Loose wheel bearings
• Incorrectly aligned caliper

Whatever the problem, a check-up offers peace of mind that your brakes are providing optimum performance.

2. Spongy Brake Pedal

It’s an unnerving experience to push down the brake pedal and feel no resistance as you do so. Many drivers describe it as a ‘spongy’ or ‘soft’ pedal. Normally it means that there’s a leak in your brakes. This is a dangerous issue, and our recommendation would be to stop driving the car until it has been checked and fixed.

A garage will check the brake fluid first, and look for visible signs of a leak. Otherwise, they’ll inspect the master cylinder, which may need replacing.

3. Vibrations in Your Steering Wheel

Does your steering wheel vibrate when you depress the brake pedal? If this is something you’re experiencing as a driver it could be caused by warped front brake rotors. It is sometimes possible to have rotors resurfaced, or they may need replacing completely. As soon as you become aware of any shaking, or vibrating in your steering wheel, let a garage take a look at your brakes.

4. Vehicle Pulls to One Side

The odd sensation that your car is pulling over to one side when you brake, could be caused by a number of different issues:

• Frozen caliper
• Worn rotors
• Faulty master cylinder
• Brake fluid leak
• Collapsed brake hose

A frozen caliper is the most likely cause. It can get stuck as a result of poor maintenance, corrosion, rust, or because the car has been in an accident. There is the option of cleaning and lubricating a frozen caliper, but if the damage is serious, it’s likely to seize up again. Most mechanics would favour replacing it.

5. Vibrating Brake Pedal

If you feel a vibration in the brake pedal when you press down on it, you’re experiencing ‘pulsating brakes’ which are caused by warped rotors. This is most likely to occurs in vehicles that make a number of long-distance journeys, or if you use your brakes excessively.

As with a vibrating steering wheel, the solution lies with resurfacing the rotors, or replacing them.
