MOT Testing Shefford
How times change! Prior to 1960 there was no legal requirement for the roadworthiness of cars to be checked at all. The Ministry Of Transport (MOT) test was brought in to cover vehicles over 10 years old, and subsequent tests would be at 10 year intervals. As you can imagine, most cars failed their MOT under this regime. All cars over 3 years old are now required to have an annual MOT test.
The 10 year test sounds ridiculous to us now, but we have to place it in the context of a road system used by far fewer vehicles. 1960 was a landmark year because the number of cars on Britain’s roads doubled. At the beginning of the year there were under 5 million cars registered, by the end of 1960 there were 10 million. In 2017 there were 37.5 million vehicles registered. Which is why Country Vehicles has a team of skilled engineers offering MOT testing in Shefford.

New Rules for MOTs in 2020
As you would expect, the MOT test is continually evolving. In May 2020, new rules came in which revised the old ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ rating. Now each item on the MOT checklist can receive one of 5 results: dangerous, major, minor, advisory or pass. Any item receiving a ‘dangerous’ or ‘major’ rating will result in an MOT failure.
If your car fails its MOT, it cannot be driven until repairs and remediation is made. Vehicles are now failed on the basis that they are a danger to other road users and additionally, if they are considered to be causing a major impact on the environment. Diesel cars in particular are under the spotlight, and stricter limits for emissions from diesel cars with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) have been introduced.
