Why Do My Brakes Squeak?

Why Do My Brakes Squeak?

6 Answers to the Question ‘Why Do My Brakes Squeak?’

It’s one of those questions we’re asked on a regular basis at Country Vehicles. After all, we all know what an important component the brake is, so it’s reasonable to ask the question ‘why do my brakes squeak?’, especially if you’re driving a fairly new car. Unfortunately, there’s no standard answer. So, the CVS team are going to go one better and offer 6 responses!

Hopefully one of our answers will solve the problem for you. Because we know how tortuous squeaky brakes can be. It’s worth keeping a note of when the squeak tends to occur, whether it’s a squeak or a grinding sound, and if you’re experiencing it consistently or once in a while. If you’re worried about your squeaky brakes, pop over to our garage in Shefford and we’ll take a look at them for you.

1. Early Morning Moisture

Do you hear a grinding sound when you use your brakes first thing in the morning? So long as it disappears once you’ve been driving for a while, it’s nothing to worry about. When your car has been left to stand overnight, moisture can build up around the brake pads. This can create a thin layer of brown rust, which creates a grinding sound when first used.

2. Bedding-In (for New Cars)

The last thing you want when you slide into your new car is squeaky brakes! Thankfully, they’re not a sign of trouble. New cars tend to use harder material in the brake pads to prolong wear and optimise stopping distances. As they ‘bed-in’ they will often emit squeaks simply because of the density of the material.

3. Worn Brake Pads

If you’re hearing a grinding when you apply pressure to your brakes, it may well indicate that your brake pads need changing. Over time your pads become thinner until they wear away completely. Then you’ll hear the grinding of metal against the brake disc. As soon as you become aware of this sound you should take your car to a garage to have your brake pads replaced. It’s a simple job that can be done quickly.

4. Cold Weather

Once again, this answer refers to an early morning phenomenon. If the weather turns icy, it can be the case that some of your brake components will freeze causing them to squeak, or squeal. This doesn’t indicate a problem; they’ll thaw pretty quickly, and you should find that your brakes will return to silent efficiency once you’ve started driving.

5. Effects of Heavy Loads

If you use your car to carry heavy loads, or you use your car regularly to carry lots of people to and from locations, you may find your car develops a squeak. This is the consequence of your brakes having to work harder to slow down. They will naturally heat up which may cause the metal to swell, which produces a squeak. It isn’t something to worry about, but you will probably need to change brake pads more regularly.

6. Grit in Your Brakes

If you’re travelling on rarely used roads, ones that have been gritted for ice, or newly laid tarmac, there’s a chance that grit or a stone could become embedded in your brakes. If this is the case, you’ll hear the screech of it being scraped along the metal disc. It’s unlikely to do major damage to your brakes and will normally dislodge quite quickly. We recommend having your brakes checked if you experience this, though.
